Pin It For The Planet!

Dust of your spokes and bust out your running shoes Canada. On Monday, May 31st, you’re not allowed to drive to work. It’s our national bike to work week, but you knew that already. What you didn’t know is that it’s also the World Wildlife Foundation’s inaugural Pin It For The Planet. The WWF is hosting a growing community on their website that lets people like you and me track the time we don’t spend driving “that selfish and thoughtless machine” and the effect it has on our environment (you can even set a cute panda or racoon as your avatar). Bike, walk, run, scooter, roller blade, skateboard, long board, kayak, paraglide, Segway, whatever, as long as you don’t drive. Then, show your commitment by pining your car key to your shirt.

We changed your How To post to Wednesday. Did you notice?

What We’ve Done So Far

We’ve been receiving quite a lot of feedback since we redesigned the UsedEverywhere.com sites, some positive and some negative. In the end we appreciate it all, because our goal is to provide you with a platform to buy and sell your stuff in your community. Here is how we’ve responded thus far:

1. Increased the size of the thumbnail pictures on the ad listing pages.

2. Increased the size of the ad titles on the ad listing pages.

3. Increased the text size in the ad view page.

4. Moved the Contact Poster box above the image on the ad view page.

5. Changed the background color on all of the UsedEverywhere.com sites.

Have a great weekend everywhere. More changes to come.

Are the Jets coming back?

In 1996 the Jets left Winnipeg and moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where they became the Phoenix Coyotes. Now, with recent ownership struggles over the team, there’s been speculation that they will be returning to Winnipeg in the near future. This begs the question: Are the Jets coming back?

What do you think?

How To: Advanced Searching

Curious about your local UsedEverywhere.com site’s advanced search functionality? If you’re looking for a particular something then you’re going to want to check out our video tutorial to find out how to do just that.

Hope that helps!

UsedTube – Sharene

A couple of weeks ago we introduced you to Charmaine from Charmaine’s Past & Present, a local antique dealer that places her inventory on UsedVictoria.com for Vancouver Island to browse through. She’s the perfect example of how a small business owner can leverage the power of their community to make a living. This week we’re sharing an interview with Sharene, a mother of two and UsedVictoria.com power user, to share her experiences with the site and dish out some buying and selling tips. Hope you enjoy!

Thanks Sharene!

Make it Your Everywhere with CSS

We’ve been getting feedback on the new look (here, here, and here), and some of you have strong opinions of what works and what doesn’t. If that’s the case, you have our permission to go ahead and change it.
All it takes is knowing a little HTML, CSS and JavaScript or, knowing someone who does.
Once you’ve made a new look, send us a screenshot and CSS ( or links work too, we’re very open about that ). Then you, or both of you, will get credit because we’ll pick some of the best designs and share your hard work with the community.
How is this Possible?
The redesign of our site, was more then just what it looks like. One of the biggest changes was how we make the page looks the way they look. We moved all the pretty things into the CSS, which means that by changing one file we can alter the look. It also means you can too.
There are add-ons you can install that allow you to override the CSS in your web browser. GreaseMonkey or GreaseKit are just two examples that let you to automatically change the look of any website. Take a look at Helvetireader to see it in action.
Is this a contest?
If you mean, is this an opportunity for mad props and acclaim, then sure.
Is there a prize?
If the praise you’ll get from your peers and the Used Community is a prize, then yes.
Is there an end date to this?
Nope. We’re hoping this can be an ongoing process where you can keep submitting, and we’ll keep sharing. We’re open to evolve this to make it easier for everyone to share looks and themes. If you have any suggestions on making this better let us know.
How do you submit the screenshot and CSS?
Anyway you can get us a screenshot and CSS file. Chances are email is the best contest@usedeverywhere.com, but if you want to give us URL’s, twitter or facebook would work too.
What if all of this is too complicated?
Doing something like this always requires a little hacking, and some technical knowledge, so we understand this challenge isn’t for everyone. But, that’s where friends come in handy. Start making a call to work with folks who know and you can choose to collaborate.
We’re looking forward to what you can do.

How To: Find Seller Information

Need Help finding Seller Information, Sharing a Listing, or Reporting an Ad?

1) Seller Information

Check out the pictures below, seller information is circled in red. Alternatively, you can watch our video tutorial to see the step-by-step process of browsing items in the site redesign and contacting a seller on your local UsedEverywhere.com.

In the new design you no longer need to scroll to the bottom of every listing but can find the information at the top of the listing in the right corner. Check out the video below!

2) Sharing and Reporting an Ad
The “Share Listing” box in red contains links that allow you to share the ad with friends via email, Facebook, or Twitter. You can also inform our moderators of an ad that violates our Terms of Use by clicking on the “Report ad” link.

Thanks, we hope this helps answer some of our recent questions, and keep the feedback coming.
