Lend a hand this Holiday Season

We at UsedVictoria.com came across this ad and corresponding news story and felt compelled to spread the word.

“It has been a struggle for us lately as work has been hard to find and bills a little harder to keep up to all the time … general labor jobs have been hard to find an coordinate with school and daycare … I have been running around to different charitable organizations trying to pull together anything. However the kindness of these organizations it seems extends only as far as help with food and presents for my kids.” … read the original ad

Are you selling something on the site, and want to donate some of those profits to local families in need of a little extra support? Include the words #deperatedaddy in your post, then people can search for all the ads supporting the cause.  Then we’ll get you in touch with Dan Peirce, or another ‘community angel’ as we like to call them.

But the giving doesn’t stop there – there are many other parents in need of a little extra support, and not only during the holiday season, so we at UsedEverywhere.com would like to create a better platform for people to donate unsold items directly to those in need.  We’re also looking to partner with some local charities!

Please send any suggestions through to donate@usedeverywhere.com or call toll free 1 (800) 480-3250 ext#4.

Sadly, Wikipedia doesn’t mention Victoria. Perhaps it should.

What’s Next? Sharing.

As of today, we’ve launch a small update. When you’ve completed the process and preview your ad, we’ve added a dialogue box that allows you to easily email your friends, share your ad on facebook or, tweet it out to your followers.

Here’s what it looks like:

Do you care if someone is selling a bike on the other side of the country?

We’ve been mulling over adding the ability to search across all of our sites. If you’re in Victoria, you could search Vancouver. If you’re in Vancouver, you could search Calgary. But recently, I’ve been wondering if by doing that, we ruin a good thing.

Here’s my train of thought and I want to know what you think.

The beautiful thing about all of our sites is that at the end of the day, you’re talking face to face with someone. Wether you meet at a coffee shop, or at your front doorstep; Wether you’re buying a bed frame or selling you bike. In the end there is human interaction. If this is the case, why would you care what’s being sold in another city?

I agree that for smaller items, easier to ship across the country, I would be more inclined to be curious to peak around the country and pay half up front to wait for the package to arrive by mail. I would be more inclined to deal with someone over the phone or by email. However, while I’m waiting I would be wondering, will it be exactly like it was in the photo or is “a little scratch on the underside” really a “massive gouge”? When it said “all accessories included” did that also mean the original Beast Man whip? And in these cases, showing up in person to see the item, I could have made that decision immediately, without any need to wait or wonder.

Where did this thought come from?

On Tuesday I was on location at North Island College and one of the appreciated aspects of UsedComoxValley.com was this idea that you’re selling neighbour to neighbour. If we opened up a national search, would it break the human factor?

What do you think about opening our sites to a national search?

Found: One Spectacular Woman

I came in this morning and started reading tweets, facebook & blog posts, like any other day. But stopped when I saw this simple tweet

So I looked online to see the ad for myself. The title was perfect! It read “Found: One Spectacular Woman

All the ladies in the office said “Ahhhhhhh!” But the big question we had, like you might have right now, is What did she say?

To @saskboy and his new fiancee,

Congratulations!

Which Canada do you "like"?

Here’s something to consider about Facebook fan pages. According to The Montreal Gazette, Canada has only 334 fans. But in taking a look at Government fan pages for Canada, which one do you follow?

While all of them say they are “government” which one is really the government? There is no ownership info; no info what-so-ever.

I’m curious which Canada facebook fan page you follow, if any? Just leave a comment with the link.
